Muhlenberg Elementary School

Summary:

Muhlenberg Elementary School is a public elementary school in Allentown, Pennsylvania, serving students from kindergarten to 5th grade. The school has a diverse student population, with a majority of Hispanic students and a high percentage of students from low socioeconomic backgrounds.

Academically, Muhlenberg Elementary School struggles, with consistently low performance on PSSA (Pennsylvania System of School Assessment) tests across all subject areas and grade levels. The school's proficiency rates in Math, Science, and English Language Arts are significantly below the state averages, and its performance ranks in the bottom 25% of Pennsylvania elementary schools. This trend extends to specific student subgroups, such as Hispanic students, students from low socioeconomic backgrounds, and students with disabilities, who all perform below the state averages for their respective subgroups.

Despite the relatively high per-student spending and low student-to-teacher ratio at Muhlenberg Elementary School, the school's academic performance remains low, suggesting that simply increasing funding and resources may not be the sole solution. Interestingly, nearby schools within the Allentown City School District also struggle academically, while schools in the neighboring Parkland School District, such as Cetronia School and Kratzer School, have significantly higher academic performance. The school's racial composition, with a higher percentage of Hispanic and African American students, may be a contributing factor, but the nearby Arts Academy Elementary Charter School, which has a similar racial makeup, also struggles academically, suggesting that other factors beyond just demographics are at play.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Muhlenberg is a wonderful community school filled with well mannered students, loving teachers, a strong principal, an observant school counselor, amazing staff and paras as well as maintenance. The parents are proud to be involved and the school is responsive to needs of the children, families and surrounding community. Local businesses and colleges support the school. All grades enjoy field trips and special events. I am a proud parent that has had 4 children graduate from Muhlenberg and have been involved in their Family Teacher Organization for 17 years!! Muhlenberg and the neighborhood that surrounds it gets all 5 stars! Close Quote

Open Quote Awful experience with kindergarten. Negligent teachers, who do not pay attention what small and big children are doing behind the doors and during lunch. As a parent very disappointed that my child is not safe there. Cameras are not attended or supervised. Little girls are harrassed and teachers are sloppy. Had to alert principal regarding safety of my child and there are multiple victims. Need police investigation whose job to supervise children: parents or teachers. My Child is under stress and fear to face school again ever at all Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
