Lehigh Valley Dual Language Charter School

Summary:

Lehigh Valley Dual Language Charter School is an elementary school in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania that serves students from kindergarten to 8th grade, with a predominantly Hispanic student population of over 95%. Despite its unique focus on dual language education, the school faces significant academic challenges, with proficiency rates well below state and district averages.

The school's academic performance, as measured by PSSA test scores, is strikingly low, with only 16% of students proficient or better in Math compared to the state average of 39.3%. However, the school performs better in certain student subgroups, such as its Hispanic students, who rank 219 out of 432 Pennsylvania elementary schools, and its English Language Learner students, who rank 97 out of 196. The school's dropout rate has remained at 0% for several years, a positive indicator, but its high percentage of students (over 99%) qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch suggests a high level of economic disadvantage among the student population.

Interestingly, the nearby public schools in the Bethlehem Area School District generally outperform Lehigh Valley Dual Language Charter School on academic measures, despite serving student populations with higher levels of economic disadvantage. For example, Calypso Elementary School and Governor Wolf Elementary School have higher PSSA proficiency rates in Math, Science, and English Language Arts compared to Lehigh Valley Dual Language Charter School. The school's unique challenges, including its fluctuating per-student funding and relatively high student-teacher ratio, may contribute to its academic struggles, despite its focus on bilingual education.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote My daughter has ben enrolled at the LVDLCS since it first opened its doors and this will be her last year attending. The first year I was very excited about her going to a school where she would learn Spanish. But every year the school continues to go downhill. Every year there is a new grade added, even thought there is not any room for the children they already have. The teachers have become visibly frustrated and with less patience to deal with the children. I have personally brought teachers to meetings with the principal due to their lack of ethics and caring. Another big problem is the fact that this kids do not have a gym or playground. The cafeteria serves as gym. My daughter is a very smart girl who has always loved school and lately she has told me she hates her teacher and begs me not to send her to school or to call her teacher on regular basic. I wish the best to this school, I love some of their teacher's and principal. But I can not stanby and allow my child to be an experiment of whether this school can make it or will end up closing. I do not recomend this school to any parent who is serious about their childs education. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
