Pennsylvania Cyber Charter School

Summary:

Pennsylvania Cyber Charter School is an alternative public virtual charter school located in Midland, PA, serving grades PK-12 with a total enrollment of 9,838 students. The school has a diverse student population, with 69.39% White, 12.6% African American, 5.58% Hispanic, 1.88% Asian, and 10.33% two or more races.

While Pennsylvania Cyber Charter School has seen improvements in its graduation and dropout rates in recent years, the school's performance still lags behind state averages. Its four-year graduation rate of 61.0% in 2022-2023 is significantly lower than the state average of 85-90%, and its dropout rate of 6.5% is higher than the state average of around 2-3%. Additionally, the school's test scores across all grade levels and subject areas, including PSSA Math, PSSA Science, PSSA English Language Arts, and Keystone Exams, are consistently lower than the state averages. For example, in 2022-2023, the school's proficiency rate in PSSA Math for all grades was 16.6%, compared to the state average of 39.3%. Despite the school's higher spending per student, ranging from $13,071 to $14,370 over the past four years, these academic outcomes suggest that simply increasing funding may not be the sole solution to improving educational performance.

Interestingly, the nearby Pennsylvania Distance Learning Charter School, located 18.61 miles away, has similar performance metrics to Pennsylvania Cyber Charter School. Both schools have lower graduation rates, higher dropout rates, and significantly lower test scores compared to the state averages. However, the Pennsylvania Distance Learning Charter School has an even more diverse student body, with a higher percentage of African American and Hispanic students. These findings suggest that virtual charter schools in the region may be facing unique challenges in delivering effective instruction and supporting student engagement and achievement, which could contribute to their lower performance compared to traditional brick-and-mortar schools.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote The teachers don't really attempt to resolve issues, many teachers don't even understand the basic interface of the virtual classroom or how to upload homework correctly, students not even being present and forcing the very few students actually there to do all work is a persistent problem, technical issues including the school getting hacked (which has happened almost every year), the tech department not fixing anything they need to (physical like laptops and website errors), and general laziness along with lack of responsibility seem to be the main problems. Headsets supplied are very cheap and stop working on their own, any and all technical issues with computers are 'resolved' by deleting every single thing on the computer, and physical damage to computers either result in getting a new computer that blocks everything related to simple research and function (which is rare considering the lack of money), or results in a partially fixed computer with new smudges and bread crumbs added in the mix. There seems to be a very severe lack of professionalism. There is some good mixed into the bad, like some good teachers who understand how to do their jobs well, but the general system is not good at all. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
