Battle Creek Elementary School

Summary:

Battle Creek Elementary School is a public elementary school in Salem, Oregon, serving students from kindergarten to 5th grade as part of the Salem-Keizer School District 24J. However, the school has seen a steady decline in its statewide ranking, dropping from 319 out of 697 Oregon elementary schools in 2015-2016 to 569 out of 710 in the most recent 2023-2024 school year, and is currently rated 1 out of 5 stars by SchoolDigger.

Battle Creek Elementary School's student performance in English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics is consistently below the district and state averages across all grade levels. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, only 29% of 3rd graders, 26% of 4th graders, and 40.5% of 5th graders were proficient or better in ELA, compared to the district averages of 23.7%, 28.4%, and 35.9%, respectively. The school also has a high percentage of students from low socioeconomic backgrounds, with 91.99% of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch in the 2022-2023 school year.

Interestingly, the nearby Candalaria Elementary, McKinley Elementary, and Schirle Elementary schools generally perform better than Battle Creek Elementary School in both ELA and Mathematics proficiency rates. For example, Candalaria Elementary had 48.9% of 3rd graders proficient or better in ELA, compared to Battle Creek's 29%. This suggests that Battle Creek Elementary School may be facing significant challenges in providing a high-quality education to its diverse student population.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote We’ve had students at their school for six years now and have been nothing but impressed by the excellent leadership and individualized attention our children have received. This school staff goes above and beyond when it comes to creating a safe, supportive environment for learning (with a lot of fun sprinkled in as well!) Close Quote

Open Quote I was very disappointed with my daughter's 4th-grade teacher Ms. Perry. She doesn't return emails and went so far as to inform my child that she didn't have time to respond to my email and she would like me to stop emailing her. I email maybe twice a month. I believe involved parents are important. She is the worst teacher I have experienced while at Battle Creek Elementry school. It's sad. :(

My child cannot spell at her grade level. BCE stopped doing spelling test with the kids. It was explained, to me that the kids are to look up a word via the class dictionary. I don't understand how that is beneficial if the child doesn't know they spelled a word incorrectly. This school hasn't prepared the kids for middle school. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
