Wilkes Elementary School is a public elementary school in Portland, Oregon, serving 443 students in grades K-5. The school is part of the Reynolds School District 7, which is ranked 137 out of 140 districts in the state and has a 0-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Wilkes Elementary School has consistently underperformed compared to state and district averages in English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics proficiency. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, only 16.9% of 3rd graders, 25% of 4th graders, and 27.7% of 5th graders were proficient or better in ELA, compared to the state averages of 39%, 41.9%, and 46.9% respectively. The school's math proficiency rates are also significantly lower than the state, ranging from 10.5% to 26.6% across the grade levels. Additionally, Wilkes Elementary School struggles to serve certain student subgroups effectively, ranking in the bottom 10-20% of Oregon elementary schools for male students, Asian students, and White students in ELA and Math.

When comparing Wilkes Elementary School to other schools in the Reynolds School District and nearby districts, it becomes clear that the school is struggling significantly compared to its peers. For example, Rockwood Preparatory Academy, a public charter school in the same district, outperforms Wilkes Elementary School across multiple academic metrics, including ELA and Math proficiency rates that are 10-20 percentage points higher. The school's high poverty concentration, with 99.77% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, likely contributes to its academic struggles and highlights the need for targeted support and resources to address the unique needs of the student population.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I DO NOT recommend this school!! The teachers break their backs for the kids which is a good thing but the office staff overshadows that with lack of accountability and disregard for the kids mental and emotional well being by minimizing school bullying and not "dealing" with important issues that are crucial to the well being of all students. I would not recommend this school to my worst enemy!! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
