Llewellyn Elementary School

Summary:

Llewellyn Elementary School is a top-performing public elementary school in Portland, Oregon, serving 413 students in grades K-5 and part of the Portland School District 1J. This school has consistently ranked among the top 30 elementary schools in Oregon, earning a 5-star rating from SchoolDigger in the 2023-2024 school year.

Llewellyn Elementary School outperforms the district and state averages in standardized test scores across all grade levels and subject areas, with proficiency rates in English Language Arts ranging from 78.9% to 83.1% and in Mathematics from 67.2% to 74.1% for grades 3-5. The school also stands out for its exceptional performance among diverse student subgroups, including Hispanic students and students with special needs, ranking 1st and 6th, respectively, out of Oregon elementary schools in these categories.

While Lewis Elementary and Woodstock Elementary are also high-performing schools in the district, Llewellyn Elementary consistently outpaces them in academic measures. This suggests that Llewellyn may be attracting a disproportionate share of the district's highest-performing students, potentially impacting the academic performance of surrounding schools. Additionally, despite serving a relatively affluent student population, with only 14.04% of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, Llewellyn's low-income students still perform at a high level, ranking 15th out of 703 Oregon elementary schools for this subgroup.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Llewellyn is overcrowded. We have about 550 kids this year. Each year since we've had our child there, the incoming classes of Kindergarteners have been huge. Temporary classrooms are being used outside of the building to house several classes. Overcrowding creates problems in nearly every area of learning, as well as the social aspect at recess. There are not enough eyes to prevent bullying out on the field. It's unfortunate that this is our current situation because the school is quite lovely with strong teachers and solid leadership. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
