Faubion Elementary School

Summary:

Faubion Elementary School is a public school in Portland, Oregon, serving grades PK-8 with a total enrollment of 610 students. While the school is part of the Portland School District 1J, which is ranked 17 out of 140 districts in Oregon, Faubion Elementary consistently ranks in the bottom half of Oregon elementary schools, with a ranking between 582-688 out of 706-710 schools over the past several years.

Faubion Elementary School's academic performance is significantly lower than the district and state averages across all grade levels and subject areas, with only 13.8% to 35.7% of students proficient or better in English Language Arts, compared to the district's 53.2% to 59.6% and the state's 39% to 46.9%. The school's performance is particularly low for certain student subgroups, such as African American, Hispanic, and Multi-racial students, who rank in the bottom 20% of their respective subgroups statewide. This may be due to the high percentage of students from low socioeconomic backgrounds, with 72.62% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch in the 2022-2023 school year.

Despite the school's challenges, it allocates more resources per student, at $31,899, compared to the district average of $27,952 to $34,984 for the nearby schools. Faubion also has a relatively low student-to-teacher ratio, ranging from 14.2 to 17 over the past three school years, compared to the nearby Alameda Elementary, Beverly Cleary School, and Sabin Elementary, which have ratios between 12.8 and 20.8. However, these higher-performing schools also have lower percentages of students from low socioeconomic backgrounds, ranging from 8.11% to 68.77% free or reduced-price lunch recipients, compared to Faubion's 72.62%.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Its been a total of 6 years, yet I still remember my hatred for this school. The teachers have no symphony for students, and if there's bullying going on, you can bet that nothing will be done. The teachers are strict, but not in a good way. Not in a way that they care about the students to make them better, for the 4 years I was there I felt like I was not wanted. Some of my worst memories come from this school, my favorite memory was crushed by the staff. My friends and I lived on the Cul-De-Sac, we decided to build a tree-house. This tree-house was the best thing at recess, and we worked outside of school to build it. The night we finished putting the tree-house, it was torn down, our belongings stolen, and the tree entirely cut down. You may be saying, how do you know it was the school who cut it down? Well there was a printed note with the schools principles and staff that simply read (Which was not in the list of rules at the time) DO NOT BUILD ON SCHOOL PROPERTY as well as the closing that is on every Faubion paper.
So basically, do I recommend this school? No. I suggest you steer far from it as possible. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
