Boise-Eliot Elementary School

Summary:

Boise-Eliot Elementary School is a public elementary school in Portland, Oregon, serving grades PK-5 with a total enrollment of 326 students. Despite being part of the Portland School District 1J, which is ranked 17 out of 140 districts in Oregon, Boise-Eliot has consistently ranked in the bottom half of Oregon elementary schools, with a ranking between 536-702 out of 706-710 schools over the past several years.

Boise-Eliot's academic performance on state assessments (OSAS) is significantly below the district and state averages across all grade levels and subject areas. For example, in 2023-2024, only 25.5% of 3rd graders were proficient in English Language Arts, compared to 56.3% in the district and 39% statewide. Compared to nearby schools, such as Alameda Elementary School, which ranked 15th out of 710 Oregon elementary schools in 2023-2024, Boise-Eliot's academic performance is notably lower. Additionally, the school has a high percentage of students from disadvantaged backgrounds, with 71.17% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch in 2022-2023.

Despite the higher per-student spending of $33,650 and a relatively low student-teacher ratio of 12.4 in 2022-2023, Boise-Eliot's academic performance remains significantly below the district and state averages. This suggests that simply increasing funding or reducing class sizes may not be sufficient to address the school's challenges, and a more comprehensive approach focused on instructional quality, curriculum, and targeted interventions may be necessary to support student success at Boise-Eliot Elementary School.

Open Quote Boise Eliot is a wonderful, welcoming and nurturing environment for children and families. Located in the heart of the Mississippi neighborhood, the student population is representative of a successfully, gently gentrifying population. Remodeled inside in the 80's, the exterior maintains it's stately 1920's brick face. The school has won several state and federal awards, having improved and maintained excellent test scores. The curriculum includes full time music and PE programs (including band and choir), science lab, 2 computer labs and a piano keyboard lab. Visual arts are woven into the core curriculum through artist residencies, performances and field trips. There is before and afterschool day care as well as a busy schedule of after school activities and classes. Algebra was added to the curriculum last year and Spanish will be added in 2011. The school is now PK-8th grades. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
