Oakland Elementary School

Summary:

Oakland Elementary School is a public elementary school serving 222 students in grades K-4 in Oakland, Oregon, which is part of the Oakland School District 1. While the district is ranked 43 out of 140 in the state, Oakland Elementary has consistently ranked in the bottom half of Oregon elementary schools, with its performance on state assessments (OSAS) falling below the state average in both English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics across grades 3 and 4.

Compared to nearby schools like Melrose Elementary and Hucrest Elementary, Oakland Elementary lags behind in ELA and Math proficiency rates. Additionally, the school has a high percentage of students from low socioeconomic status backgrounds, with 65.32% of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, significantly higher than the state average and the nearby schools. This suggests that the school may be facing challenges in addressing the unique needs and challenges faced by its student population.

The data also indicates that Oakland Elementary School's performance has declined over the years, with its statewide ranking dropping from 162 out of 707 schools in 2012-2013 to 490 out of 710 schools in 2023-2024. This trend is concerning and suggests that the school may need to focus on targeted interventions and collaborations with higher-performing nearby schools to improve student outcomes, particularly for specific subgroups such as female students, male students, and white students, whose performance is significantly below average compared to other Oregon elementary schools.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote The reading program that this school utilizes is amazing. My son transferred in during the middle of his 1st grade year, he was barely reading at an entry level kindergarten level. Now he is in 3rd grade and reading at an advanced 5th grade level. The extra attention and care he received has allowed him to blossom into a great student. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
