New Urban High School

Summary:

New Urban High School is a small public high school serving grades 9-12 in Milwaukie, Oregon, with a total enrollment of just 90 students. Despite its small size and relatively high per-student spending, the school has consistently underperformed academically, ranking in the bottom tier of Oregon high schools over the past decade.

The school's academic proficiency rates are significantly lower than the district and state averages. In 2023-2024, only 15.6% of 11th-grade students were proficient or better in English Language Arts, compared to 45.7% in the North Clackamas School District 12 and 45.2% statewide. In science, the proficiency rate was just 6.9%, compared to 25.5% in the district and 32% statewide. This underperformance is particularly concerning given that 75.56% of New Urban High School's students come from low socioeconomic backgrounds, significantly higher than the district and state averages.

When comparing New Urban High School to other nearby schools in the North Clackamas School District, the performance gap is quite stark. For example, Clackamas Middle College, a public charter high school in the same district, ranked 15th out of 268 Oregon high schools in 2023-2024 and had significantly higher proficiency rates in English Language Arts (77.5%), Mathematics (36.6%), and Science (57.7%) compared to New Urban High School. Despite the school's relatively low student-teacher ratio and high per-student spending, these resources have not translated into improved academic outcomes for the students at New Urban High School.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote A majority of the students there are giving a "second chance" refering to them attending different school before hand and doing very poorly, a lot of the students have a problem with discipline and potential drug issues. If you have to come to this school do it to catch up. Teachers will try to "be friends" with you then stab you in the back later on. If you keep to yourself and do your work, you will do just fine here. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
