River Road/Elementary Camino del Rio Elementary School

Summary:

River Road/Elementary Camino del Rio Elementary School is a public elementary school in Eugene, Oregon, serving 385 students in grades K-5. The school is part of the Eugene School District 4J, which is ranked 20 out of 140 districts in the state.

While the school has access to adequate resources, with a relatively high spending per student of $18,989 and a student-teacher ratio between 15.9 and 17.1, its academic performance has been a concern. The school's English Language Arts (ELA) and mathematics proficiency rates are generally lower than the district and state averages, ranging from 33.8% to 55.6% and 27.3% to 31.5% respectively for grades 3-5. In comparison, nearby Yujin Gakuen Elementary School consistently ranks among the top elementary schools in Oregon, while other nearby schools in the Eugene School District 4J, such as Cesar Chavez Elementary, Spring Creek Elementary, and Buena Vista Elementary, also outperform River Road/Elementary Camino del Rio Elementary School in both ELA and mathematics.

However, the school's performance for certain student subgroups, such as male and Hispanic students, is relatively stronger compared to their statewide peers, suggesting the school may be effectively supporting these populations. Additionally, the school's 5th-grade science proficiency rate of 35.2% in 2023-2024, while lower than the district and state averages, is still higher than the state average. Overall, River Road/Elementary Camino del Rio Elementary School faces challenges in improving its academic performance, but it also has some bright spots in its support for specific student groups.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote There are several problems with the ratings here.
1.) Camino del Rio is a Spanish-English bilingual immersion school with the possibility of student earning a certificate of bilingualism if they follow the 12 year program. The test scores reflect the variety in the school population - not the ability or education here.
2.) Camino del Rio has a brand new facility (2017), complete with features to be environmentally friendly, including a school garden, water features, plenty of bike racks and recapturing water. Students have regular access to technology and an open media center.
3.) Over the last decade, the school had some issues with keeping a steady principal, but the current principal for the last several years, Joel Lavin, has been a guiding light and had a positive effect on the school's culture and attitude.
4.) Other activities include the school marimba band, social justice club, Lego Robotics club, Strings program and BEST. Close Quote

Open Quote El Camino del Rio/ River Road is a neighborhood and dual-immersion Spanish/English elementary school with a caring and committed staff, a top notch music program (marimbas, ukuleles, world music, movement, theater), an engaged and responsive principal and a new school building in the works.

The state test scores don't account for the situation that half of the students come from households in which Spanish is the primary language.

The rankings also don't reflect that in dual-immersion schools, typically test scores are more than made up for in higher grades simply because all of the students can work in two languages. Along with two languages, the children are intentionally made aware of a diversity of other cultures. The Spanish-speaking world is large and contains within in it many cultures. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
