Arthur Academy

Summary:

Arthur Academy is a public charter elementary school located in Portland, Oregon, serving grades K-5 with a total enrollment of 158 students. The school is part of the David Douglas School District, which is ranked 102 out of 140 districts in Oregon and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Arthur Academy has a strong performance history, ranking in the top 33% of Oregon elementary schools for several years, with a peak ranking of 57th out of 707 schools in the 2012-2013 school year. However, its ranking has declined in recent years, dropping to 246th out of 710 schools in the 2023-2024 school year, while maintaining a 3-star rating from SchoolDigger. The school consistently outperforms the David Douglas School District and the state of Oregon in standardized test scores across all grade levels and subjects, with its 3rd-grade students scoring 56.5% proficient or better in English Language Arts and 60.9% proficient or better in mathematics, compared to the district and state averages. Additionally, Arthur Academy serves a more economically diverse student population, with a lower percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch compared to the nearby Menlo Park Elementary and Ventura Park Elementary schools.

Despite its strong academic performance, Arthur Academy's statewide ranking has declined in recent years, suggesting that other schools in the state may be improving at a faster rate. Additionally, the school's performance on standardized tests varies across different student subgroups, with male students and students from low socioeconomic backgrounds generally outperforming their female and higher-income peers. This highlights the need for the school to closely monitor and address any achievement gaps among its diverse student population. Overall, Arthur Academy is a high-performing public charter school that has demonstrated strong academic results, particularly in comparison to the surrounding David Douglas School District, but it faces challenges in maintaining its statewide ranking and addressing achievement gaps within its student body.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote David Douglas Charter School is a excellent learning establishment. I have had one child complete her 3rd,4th and 5th grades there and now she is attending Alice Ott and getting all A's..Now I am faced with the choice of moving or allowing my smart eager to learn child into the David Douglas Highschool which is highly overpoplated and under challenging. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
