Summary:

Philander Lee Elementary School is a public elementary school located in Canby, Oregon, serving grades K-6 with a total enrollment of 316 students. The school is part of the Canby School District 86, which is ranked 69 out of 140 districts in Oregon and has a 3-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Philander Lee Elementary School has consistently ranked in the lower half of Oregon elementary schools, with its performance on state assessments (OSAS) generally below the district and state averages in both English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics. For example, in 2023-2024, the school's 3rd-grade ELA proficiency rate was 27.5%, compared to 40% for the Canby School District and 39% for the state. Compared to nearby schools in the same district, such as Carus School and Ninety-One School, Philander Lee Elementary School generally underperforms in both ELA and Mathematics across multiple grade levels.

The school's higher percentage of students from low socioeconomic backgrounds, with 37.34% of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch in the 2022-2023 school year, may be a contributing factor to its academic performance. The school's per-student spending for the 2021-2022 school year was $18,795, which is higher than the state average, but its academic performance remains below average, raising questions about the effectiveness of the school's resource allocation. Overall, Philander Lee Elementary School faces significant challenges in terms of academic performance, and targeted interventions and support may be necessary to address the school's performance gaps.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote The teachers here are top notch, but there is no programs AT ALL for children with higher aptitudes. There is TAG (Talented and Gifted) testing for children, but if they are identified as such through high scores, there is no differentiation for your child. In this case, your child will have to struggle with boredom as teachers are now currently overwhelmed by high class numbers due to a boundary switch with a neighboring elementary school. I believe TAG classes are offered through Baker Prairie Middle School which would start for your child at grade 7. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
