Soper High School

Summary:

Soper High School is a small public high school in Soper, Oklahoma, serving grades 9-12 with a student population of just 79 as of the 2022-2023 school year. The school has a diverse student body, with a majority of White (44.3%) and Native American (49.37%) students, but it has struggled academically compared to nearby schools.

Soper High School's academic performance has declined significantly in recent years, with only 20% of 11th-grade students proficient or better in English Language Arts, 5% in Mathematics, and 4.8% in Science. This places the school in the bottom 12% of high schools in Oklahoma, a far cry from its ranking of 68th out of 251 schools just a few years ago. Despite having a low student-teacher ratio of 9:1, the school has not been able to translate this advantage into improved academic outcomes. The high percentage of students (64.56%) receiving free or reduced-price lunch also suggests that the school serves a population with significant economic challenges.

When compared to nearby schools like Bennington High School, which had 50% proficiency in ELA and 28.6% in Mathematics, Soper High School's performance is clearly lagging. This disparity highlights the need for the school to learn from the successful practices and strategies of its higher-performing counterparts within the Bennington, Antlers, Hugo, and Boswell school districts.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Soper is a really good school with teachers that truly care for the students as their own. I just graduated there in May, 2018, and I would like to be a coach/teacher there one of these days. They don't have a huge ethnic diversity but that's just because no kids of different ethnicity gets sent there. Nobody gets treated any differently from the next person and they are always looking to grow their school! I do believe that it is very awesome school with not a whole lot of problems! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
