Northwest Classen High School

Summary:

Northwest Classen High School is a public high school in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, serving 1,902 students in grades 9-12. The school has a long history, having been established in 1927, but it has consistently underperformed compared to other high schools in the state.

According to the key insights, Northwest Classen High School ranks 396 out of 431 Oklahoma high schools, with only 14% of 11th-grade students proficient or better in English Language Arts and 2.9% proficient or better in Mathematics. The school's four-year graduation rate of 80.1% is also lower than the state and district averages. The school serves a predominantly disadvantaged student population, with 95.58% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch. Despite a relatively high per-student spending of $9,951, the school's academic outcomes remain poor, likely due to its high student-teacher ratio of 19.3.

When compared to nearby schools, the performance gap is quite stark. For example, Classen High School of Advanced Studies, located just 1.88 miles away, ranked 3rd out of 431 Oklahoma high schools in 2023-2024 and had significantly higher academic proficiency rates. This highlights the significant educational disparities within the Oklahoma City school district. While Northwest Classen High School faces significant challenges, it performs relatively better for English Language Learners and Special Education students, ranking in the top 50% and top 25% of Oklahoma high schools, respectively, in these categories.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
