Elmwood Place Elementary School

Summary:

Elmwood Place Elementary School is a public elementary school serving grades 3-6 in the St Bernard-Elmwood Place City School District in Cincinnati, Ohio, with a student population of 132 as of the 2022-2023 school year. The school faces significant challenges, particularly in the areas of chronic absenteeism and academic performance, which are exacerbated by racial and socioeconomic disparities.

Elmwood Place Elementary School has consistently high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 37.9% in 2022-2023 to 49.6% in 2020-2021, which is significantly higher than the state average and the rates of nearby schools like St Bernard Elementary School (37.6%) and other Cincinnati Public Schools (46.2% at Academy for Multilingual Immersion Studies, 54.0% at Roselawn Condon School, and 51.9% at ReGeneration Bond Hill). The school's academic performance, as measured by proficiency rates on Ohio State Tests, is mixed, with strong performance in 5th grade science and English Language Arts, but struggling in mathematics, particularly in 3rd grade.

Elmwood Place Elementary School's statewide ranking has declined over the past several years, dropping from a high of 406 out of 1,651 Ohio elementary schools in 2016-2017 to 1,123 out of 1,596 in 2022-2023, placing the school in the bottom quarter of Ohio elementary schools. The school's performance also varies significantly across different student subgroups, with African American students performing well, but White students and students of low socioeconomic status struggling. Addressing the root causes of chronic absenteeism and implementing targeted interventions to address equity and access issues could be important steps in improving student outcomes at Elmwood Place Elementary School.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I completely agree with the overall rating for this school. It's a shame that this school has to be attached to St. Bernards overall rating for the district. I took my child out of this school and he goes to one not five mins away outside of the neighborhood and it's a big difference. I hate to say it but even in elementary schools race is a factor. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
