Main Preparatory Academy

Summary:

Main Preparatory Academy is a small public charter elementary school in Akron, Ohio, serving 71 students from kindergarten to 6th grade. The school faces significant challenges, with consistently high chronic absenteeism rates and academic performance that falls well below state and local averages.

Over the past few years, Main Preparatory Academy has reported chronic absenteeism rates ranging from 51.7% to 69.4%, which is much higher than the state average. The school's academic performance, as measured by Ohio State Test proficiency rates, is also concerning. In the 2023-2024 school year, only 10% of 3rd-grade students were proficient or better in mathematics, compared to the state average of 62.1%. While the school's English Language Arts performance is slightly better, with 54.5% of 3rd-grade students and 73.3% of 5th-grade students proficient or better, it still lags behind nearby public schools like Voris Community Learning Center.

Main Preparatory Academy's overall performance is reflected in its statewide ranking, which has consistently placed it in the bottom 10-15% of Ohio elementary schools, with a ranking between 1,180 and 1,671 out of 1,577 schools in the 2023-2024 school year. The school has received a 1-star rating out of 5 from SchoolDigger for the majority of the years analyzed, indicating poor overall performance. While the school's African American students perform better than the overall student population, the low-socioeconomic status students rank in the bottom 30% of Ohio elementary schools, suggesting significant achievement gaps that need to be addressed.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This school has no other form of discipline other than calling the parents and sending the children home. they expect certain children to come in and be perfect and others to just run around as they please and just ignore their behavior. Whereas if another student acts out they are sent home for the same behaviors that were perfectly acceptable for another child. Their curriculum for kindergarteners is that of which a 3 year old would be competent of completing. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
