Cleveland Arts and Social Sciences Academy

Summary:

Cleveland Arts and Social Sciences Academy is a public charter elementary school serving 282 students in grades K-8 in Cleveland, Ohio, with a predominantly African American student population of 96.1%.

The school has struggled academically, with proficiency rates on state tests below the state average across most grade levels and subject areas. For example, the school's 8th grade mathematics proficiency rate was 80% compared to the state average of 46.3%. The school also experiences high rates of chronic absenteeism, reaching as high as 83.3% in the 2020-2021 school year. As a result, Cleveland Arts and Social Sciences Academy has consistently ranked in the bottom quarter of Ohio elementary schools, with a 2-star rating out of 5 from SchoolDigger. While the school's African American students perform relatively well compared to other Ohio elementary schools, other subgroups such as female and male students, as well as low socioeconomic status students, perform much worse.

Interestingly, the two nearby charter schools, Village Preparatory School Woodland Hills and Phoenix Village Academy Primary 2 dba Wings Academy 1, also struggle academically, with rankings and performance metrics similar to Cleveland Arts and Social Sciences Academy. This suggests that the challenges faced by the school may be systemic within the local charter school system. Additionally, Cleveland Arts and Social Sciences Academy spends approximately $7,532 per student, which is lower than the $9,607 spent per student at Village Preparatory School Woodland Hills, raising questions about the relationship between funding and academic outcomes.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I have never been so disgusted then I was with CASSA. It was a terrible experience for my child. I came into the building one day and saw a parent hitting their child in the bathroom and their child was screaming. I heard students swearing at their teachers. The principal did nothing to create a safe environment since she allowed students to act that way. I would NEVER send my child back there again! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
