Apex Academy

Summary:

Apex Academy is an elementary public charter school in Cleveland, Ohio, serving 484 students from kindergarten to 8th grade. The school faces significant challenges, with academic performance below the state average and a high rate of chronic absenteeism.

Apex Academy stands out for its high percentage of African American students, at 89.05% compared to the state average. While the school's African American students perform relatively well compared to other schools in Ohio, the overall academic performance at Apex Academy is concerning. In the 2023-2024 school year, the percentage of students proficient or better in Mathematics ranged from 28.9% to 64.7%, and in English Language Arts, the proficiency rates ranged from 29.5% to 60%, all below the state averages. The school's chronic absenteeism rate has also increased significantly, from 14.3% in 2018-2019 to 54.0% in 2021-2022, indicating a potential challenge in student engagement.

Interestingly, the nearby Citizens Leadership Academy East, another public charter school, has a similar student racial makeup but a lower chronic absenteeism rate and a higher student-teacher ratio. Additionally, Citizens Leadership Academy East has a lower per-student spending compared to Apex Academy, suggesting that factors beyond just funding may be contributing to the differences in student outcomes between the two schools.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote My children went to Cleveland Public Schools for their first 2 years. I had nothing but problems. Their first school was Joseph Landis, it was a Joke. I hated it, but I lived across the street from it. The Principle was alright at times but most of the teachers were not. Only a hand full of the teachers really gave a care, maybe because the students were so, way out of control. I started having problems with the office and staff the first year. I would have rated them a 3. After Joseph Landis closed down in 2009, most of the students went to Michael R. White. The principle in this school had her work cut out for her. All of the trouble students went over to this Elementary school and it was swarmed with problems and bullies. The teachers and staff here were better than Joseph Landis but the students were way out of control. There was no room for learning in this school. Students were to busy worrying about getting jumped on the playgrounds and after school to have a productive day. Parents could barely pick up their children after school, without an altercation of some sort, everyday. I removed my children from there. In both of these schools, you ate breakfast at your own risk. Lunch wasn't better by much. Recess time was un-properly supervised. Bullying was a huge problem and could not be controlled. Descent parents worried from the time the children stepped in school to the time they walked back in the home.
Since enrolling my children in Apex Academy, I have no complaints. The Principle is very caring. The teachers are gentle and caring. The environment is peaceful. We have experienced no bullying whatsoever. Learning is achieved. School activities are regular, organized and fun for the students and parents. The communication between the school and home via recorded calls is a wonderful idea, this keeps the parents abreast of everything. Open communication with a caring teacher makes a world of difference. Breakfast time and Lunch time is organized and peaceful. Drop off and Pick up of the students is drama free and organized. I no longer contemplate Home-School for my children's safety and proper education. My children enjoy school now. I feel good about them being away at school all day. I love having happy Honor Roll students again. My children went from being unhappy students, on Eugene Sanders list of students to watch for the Gifted and Talented Program, to happy Honor Roll students, satisfied and happy to be Apex Academy students. I love this school and its rules and its teachers. Our favorite teacher by far is Kathleen Mahoney.
(1 star for each attribute:Inspiring,Compassionate,Demanding,Fair,Excellent Communicator). I would rate her a 5 star teacher. I also commend Tierra Johnson for being a great teacher. I am thankful for The New Apex Academy and its teachers and staff. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
