Middlebury Academy

Summary:

Middlebury Academy is a public charter elementary school serving 145 students in grades K-8 in Akron, Ohio. The school has consistently ranked among the lowest-performing elementary schools in the state, with a statewide ranking between 1300-1600 out of around 1600 elementary schools and a 0 or 1 out of 5 star rating from SchoolDigger, indicating very low performance.

Middlebury Academy faces significant challenges, including an extremely high chronic absenteeism rate ranging from 50.8% to 80.3% over the past few years, far exceeding the state average and the rates of nearby schools like Glover Community Learning Center and Main Preparatory Academy. Additionally, the school's students perform poorly on state assessments, with only 9.1% of 3rd graders proficient in math compared to the state average of 62.1%. These academic struggles are seen across grade levels and subject areas.

Despite the school's low student-teacher ratio, ranging from 8.9 to 11.1 over the past few years, Middlebury Academy's performance has remained persistently low, suggesting deep-seated challenges that the school has struggled to address. The school's predominantly African American and low-income student population also points to systemic inequities that need to be addressed, as these subgroups perform significantly worse than their peers statewide. Addressing the issues at Middlebury Academy will require a comprehensive, data-driven approach that targets the root causes of the school's persistent underperformance.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote If I could leave a one star I would, a teacher who has quit told us his experience of his former job, now he currently works at my school, and the story of his HORRIBLE experience was expressed in the most horrific ways possible. I am a 8th grade from another school, and if you think any other school in Ohio is bad, the stories constantly prove why they're ranked so badly. He says that staff is wonderful, but the students can get away with anything as he had explained he was nearly pushed from a second story window, car nearly stolen, and even destroying his car keys, we cant forget these kids are thuggish and steal from their facility, I am not from the best of schools, but I am just a worried citizen for what can become of your children and what will happened to their pure heart's, please stay away. Open Quote I met with the principal summer of 2018 and she explained much of what she strives against to give her students the best education she can. i was very impressed. Her obstacles are many, and she is very proud of her staff and the work they do. I'm sold. It may not be for everybody, but I believe they serve a great public need to the best of their ability. Open Quote Middlebury is the most unprofessional school i seen so far, and its not the school per say its the teacher/after school teacher, she is very rude and unprofessional, she treated my son so poorly when I picked him up he had tears in his eyes, she was rude and disrespectful to me over the phone and when I go to the school to talk to the principal about it her whole story change, so after the meeting with the principal I let it go and weeks goes by then another situation comes about and my son said she was yelling at him and was being mean and she said to him i don't care who you tell im not scared of your mother. How unprofessional is that? To me as a teacher you handle situation in a dtfferent manner and you should never tell a 7 year old im not scared of your mother you can tell who ever you want, that pissed me off and something must be done, that teacher said it in front of my face and had a look on her face like she meant what she said, my son will not be back there the teachers all stick together including the principal and the board of education will be notified!!! About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
