Open Quote St. Joan of Arc is a small school with a caring and dedicated staff. It is a safe place for your children to grow and excel both intellectually and emotionally. Academically, I believe the school to be superior to all the other options in Jackson Heights. The percentage of students scoring at and exceeding the NYS proficiency standards for English, Language, Arts (ELA) for grade 4 was 66.44 or 19 percentage points over the NYS average (PS 69 obtained 61.3) for grade 6, 68.57, or 19.57 percentage over NYS average for grade 8, 66.67, or 19.07 over NYS average. With respect to the Math results, grade 4, 79 or 30.8 over the NYS average (PS 69 scored 5.7) for grade 6, 58.33, or 14.3 for grade 8, 57.58 or 27.58 over NYS average.

Moreover, the test results by performance levels were weighted heavily towards level 4. In this respect, it blows PS 69 out of the water for grade 4 test takers, i.e., 57.14 of the St. Joan of Arc students were at level 4 compared to 26.4 of the PS 69 students.

What is extremely important to note when looking at these numbers is the fact that a large percentage of student body at St. Joan of Arc come from homes where English is a second language. When one considers the fact that this puts these students at a disadvantage compared to a home where English is the primary language to the extent that parents in those homes are better equipped to reinforce school lessons in this regard. In other words, these students presumably weighed down the overall average in the English, Language, Arts component of the standardized tests. This makes the scores all the more remarkable.

Another thing that I really like about the school are the quality of parents. The parents, while not the super-high earning ivy league educated crowd, are the type of parents who take an interest in their kids education and want to make the school a better place. in other words, the parents behave like they have a vested interest in the overall success of the school and their children. The parents that I have met have included attorneys, business owners, accountants, folks with MBAs, retired military personnel, public school teachers, etc. Mostly, working-class professionals but not exclusively.

St. Joan of Arc has proven itself as a great learning institution. I plan to keep my kids there through middle school. Close Quote

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
