Open Quote Storm King School is truly a unique, extraordinary Boarding School. It is hard to convey how much we appreciate what it has offered our son and the wonderful growth it has helped him to achieve. It provides such a supportive and nurturing environment that students feel so confident in realizing potential that I'm sure they never imagined that had. That's certainly been the case with our son. I am confident that his experience has full prepared him to be a success in all future endeavors, whether that is academic, social, athletic or simply moral behavior.

The school offers such a customized approach to education that my son has a class where he is the only student. How many institutions would offer that opportunity. I'm sure very few, but it's that kind of caring faculty that attracted us to the school in the first place and has made such a difference to our son. He gets the kind of attention that so many larger schools can't or simply don't offer. Every one learns at a different pace and yet Storm King finds a way to meet the needs of everyone I've met there. I've yet to meet a parent who doesn't love the place.

We live in NYC and the school's proximity to the city is a major benefit. our son can be home in a little over an hour for a family event or to touch base with old friends in the city. However, the friends he's made at Storm King and his active involvement with extracurricular and sports activities make him want to stay on the mountain every weekend. But it's nice to know he's so close that we can easily go to a soccer game or a school play.

We will always have a wonderful feeling about Storm King. Close Quote

Open Quote We are very pleased to recommend Storm King School. My son has attended this school since the 8th grade and has flourished. The faculty and teachers are very supportive and encouraging. They treat each student as an individual with their own talents and abilities. There is also a broad range of extracurricular activities to choose from. The academics are challenging. The art and music program is also extraordinary. Close Quote

Open Quote SKS is a mountaintop masterpiece. My child is treated as an individual. She has been in the classroom with outstanding faculty who creatively bring out the best in their students and love their jobs. My child is part of a very friendly and respectful student body. Students all over the world come together to learn together. She will be prepared to be successful in college and the global world thanks to the SKS experience. Small community, safe and supportive environment, superb and dynamic faculty, administration and staff. SKS's academics, extracurriculars and IPAD technology all come together for meeting each child's needs. SKS is a place well worth finding out more. As a parent I highly recommend this school. Open Quote In her first year at Storm King School (9th grade), our daughter has thrived. We are young parents and have had to make a significant sacrifice to send our daughter to SKS. Based on her first half of the year, it has been the best investment that we could have made.

Academics: Coming from public schools in New York City, we have been very pleased that the teachers have high expectations for our daughter and also offer her support and time after class to cover material that she found challenging. In addition to helping her learn the content of each class, she has received support from the Learning Center that has enabled to her to begin to develop the independence and study habits that she will need to be successful in college. Moreover, the teachers have demonstrated a true passion for pedagogy. We have been particularly impressed with her English teacher, and the way that he guides his students to engage with literature and traditional essay writing, while also developing his students’ creativity and critical thinking. We also really like that she has the opportunity to take Mandarin Chinese – this is indicative of the breadth of course offerings at Storm King.

Extra-curricular activities: SKS has created the environment where students are able to take risks and encourages them to find areas outside of academics that they are passionate about. While previously she did not demonstrate a passion for sports, she has already played on two sports teams in her first half of the year. She particularly enjoyed the experience on the soccer team and built great camaraderie with her teammates. Also, she has participated in the dance program, which is quite extraordinary. The recent dance recital gave the students in the dance program the opportunity to showcase all that they had been working on to the entire school community.

Boarding environment and peers: As you might imagine, we were very apprehensive to send our 9th grade daughter to boarding school. However, the SKS boarding experience has exceeded our expectations. First of all, the dean, house parents and other faculty are well attuned to what is happening with the students – which puts us at ease as parents. Also, we really like that our daughter has the opportunity to interact with such a diverse group of students from all around the world. As a byproduct of being in this environment, she has become more intellectually curious about the world outside of NYC and the United States. She also has developed a close group of friends that have ambitious plans for their future.

In summary, the individualized attention, the deep commitment to excellence and the nurturing environment of SKS makes it an ideal place for our daughter to attend high school. Close Quote

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
