Summary:

Sycamore Avenue Elementary School is a public elementary school in Bohemia, New York, serving 382 students in grades K-5. The school is part of the Connetquot Central School District, which is ranked 298 out of 866 school districts in New York and has a 3-star rating from SchoolDigger.

While Sycamore Avenue Elementary School has a significantly higher percentage of white students (74.61%) compared to nearby schools, its academic performance lags behind its peers. The school's test scores in English Language Arts (ELA) and Math are generally lower than the district and state averages, and it ranks very low (2016 out of 2016) among New York elementary schools for its special education student performance. Additionally, the school has a relatively high percentage of students (27.49%) receiving free or reduced-price lunch, suggesting a higher proportion of students from lower-income families.

Sycamore Avenue Elementary School's statewide ranking has steadily declined over the years, from a high of 852 out of 2,366 New York elementary schools in 2015-2016 to a low of 1,496 out of 2,439 in 2022-2023. This trend is concerning, especially when compared to the consistently higher-performing nearby schools, such as Idle Hour Elementary School and Edward J. Bosti Elementary School, which are part of the same school district. Despite having a relatively low student-teacher ratio of 8:1 and higher spending per student ($25,718 in 2022-2023) than the district and state averages, Sycamore Avenue Elementary School's academic performance remains a concern for the community.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I conduct blues history lessons and songwriting workshops annually at this school. The teachers are all incredibly helpful, professional, caring, and enthusiastic. The kids are amazing. Everyone from the administrators to the custodians are super friendly. It's a great place to be, and I look forward to my two days there every spring! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
