Brooklyn Gardens Elementary School

Summary:

Brooklyn Gardens Elementary School is a public elementary school serving grades PK-5 in the New York City Geographic District #19, with a student population of 277 that is predominantly African American and Hispanic.

Despite having a relatively high per-student spending of around $24,000, Brooklyn Gardens Elementary School has consistently underperformed compared to the district and state averages on the New York State Assessments for English Language Arts and Math, with proficiency rates ranging from 27% to 45% in Math and 35% to 43% in ELA. The school has been ranked in the bottom quartile of New York elementary schools for the past several years, with a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger, placing it among the lowest-performing schools in the state. However, the school has shown some strengths in specific student subgroups, such as its African American and Special Education students performing better relative to their peers in the state.

When compared to nearby schools in the same district, such as PS 328 Phyllis Wheatley and PS 13 Roberto Clemente, Brooklyn Gardens Elementary School is performing significantly worse, with lower proficiency rates and overall rankings. The school's location in a high-poverty area, the racial and socioeconomic composition of the student population, and the district's overall low performance may be contributing factors to the school's struggles, which will need to be addressed to drive meaningful improvements.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This school has a lot of work to do. They do not communicate very well with parents and it’s not a trusting environment. The teachers are fine, however, can be lazy. The students who are aggressive do not have the necessary support they need and take anger out on the other children. That’s not fair to anyone. There is no indoor play site for the little ones and the kids resort to playing in the auditorium when the weather is not permitting of them being outside. Very dangerous. Parent involvement is almost nonexistent. Not because the parents don’t want to be involved, but because the school doesn’t provide opportunities to do so. There was initial talk of so but the momentum died down to the point where it went no where. There’s no consistent daily or even weekly updates for the little ones. I do not recommend this program. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
