Urban Assembly New York Harbor School

Summary:

Urban Assembly New York Harbor School is a public magnet high school serving grades 9-12 in New York City's District #2, with a student population of 499.

The school has a specialized focus on maritime studies and the environment, which may contribute to its strong performance in subjects like Global History and Geography, but lower performance in more traditional math and science subjects compared to the district and state averages. While the school's 4-year graduation rate is on par with the surrounding area, it has struggled with high chronic absenteeism rates. When compared to nearby schools, Urban Assembly New York Harbor School generally outperforms lower-performing institutions like South Brooklyn Community High School, but lags behind higher-achieving schools such as Millennium High School and John V Lindsay Wildcat Academy Charter School.

The school serves a diverse student population, with strong performance for certain subgroups like African American and multi-racial students, but struggles with its English Language Learner and Special Education populations. With approximately 61% of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, the school's higher per-student spending suggests additional resources are being directed towards supporting its economically disadvantaged community. Overall, Urban Assembly New York Harbor School demonstrates both strengths and areas for improvement as it works to provide a unique and supportive educational experience for its students.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Great principal and admin who are turning the school in an upwards direction academically, many wonderful teachers, with after school activities that are off the charts unusual and exciting--sailing, sea rowing, boat building, boat driving, scuba. Environmentally conscious too- with an organic garden. Especially good for kids with learning differences. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
