Amber Charter School East Harlem

Summary:

Amber Charter School East Harlem is a public charter elementary school serving 336 students in grades K-5 in the East Harlem neighborhood of New York City. The school is part of the Amber Charter School East Harlem District, which is ranked 689 out of 865 districts in New York and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Academically, Amber Charter School East Harlem has had a mixed performance, with proficiency rates in English Language Arts (ELA) and Math below the state averages in some grade levels, but stronger performance in others. The school has shown strengths in the performance of specific student groups, such as Hispanic students and Special Education students, but has struggled with the academic achievement of male students, English Language Learners, and students from low socioeconomic backgrounds. Despite an increase in per-student spending and a relatively low student-teacher ratio, the school continues to face challenges in meeting the state's proficiency standards.

When compared to nearby schools in the East Harlem area, Amber Charter School East Harlem generally performs better academically, but still lags behind the higher-performing Tag Young Scholars, a public magnet school. The high free and reduced lunch rates at Amber Charter School East Harlem and the nearby schools suggest that the East Harlem community faces significant socioeconomic challenges, which may contribute to the academic performance gaps observed between the charter school and the magnet school.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Amber is a great school! This is my son's 2nd year there. He is not one to open up with strangers and usually very introverted. However, his teachers from Kindergarten and 1st grade are wonderful with getting him to come out of his shell. Also the admin. staff is wonderful with making him feel welcome and engaged. He is a bright student that makes the honor roll every marking period. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
