Elmcrest Elementary

Summary:

Elmcrest Elementary is a public elementary school in Reno, Nevada, serving 319 students from kindergarten to 5th grade. The school is part of the Washoe County School District, which is ranked 5th out of 13 districts in the state and has a 4-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Elmcrest Elementary has consistently ranked in the lower half of Nevada elementary schools, with a ranking between 208 and 307 out of 377-384 schools in recent years. The school's performance on SBAC assessments is below the Washoe County and Nevada state averages in both mathematics and reading across all grade levels. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, Elmcrest's proficiency rates were 29% in mathematics and 38.6% in reading, compared to the Washoe County averages of 33.9% and 41.1%, respectively. Additionally, Elmcrest Elementary has a 100% free and reduced-price lunch rate, indicating a high percentage of students from low-income families, which is significantly higher than nearby schools like Hunter Lake Elementary (38.89%) and Roy Gomm Elementary (11.28%).

Despite the relatively high per-student spending at Elmcrest Elementary, ranging from $12,248 to $13,794 in recent years, the school's academic performance remains below the district and state averages. This suggests that simply increasing funding may not be the sole solution, and that the effective allocation and utilization of resources may be an important factor in improving student outcomes. Elmcrest Elementary's academic performance is notably lower than many of the nearby schools, such as Mount Rose K-8 Academy of Languages and Roy Gomm Elementary, which consistently rank in the top 25-30% of Nevada elementary schools and have significantly higher proficiency rates on SBAC assessments.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I went to this school, and it is better than these charts make it out to be. The teachers I knew (most are gone now) were fantastic, and there are still a couple at the school. It is a fantastic elementary school. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
