Sunset View Elementary

Summary:

Sunset View Elementary is a public elementary school in Albuquerque, New Mexico, serving 482 students in grades K-5. The school consistently ranks among the top 25% of elementary schools in the state, with strong academic performance that exceeds the Albuquerque and New Mexico averages.

Sunset View Elementary has maintained a 4-star rating from SchoolDigger in most years, with particularly high performance in certain student subgroups like Native American students and English Language Learners. The school has a diverse student population, with a mix of Hispanic, White, and other minority students, and a lower percentage of free/reduced-price lunch recipients compared to nearby schools. Sunset View also maintains a relatively low student-teacher ratio, which may contribute to its academic success.

While Sunset View Elementary outperforms many of its peers in the Albuquerque district, the presence of high-performing charter schools like Coyote Willow Family School in the Rio Rancho district suggests that families in the area may have access to a range of quality educational options.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote They do not support kids with learning disabilities and there is a huge problem with bullying. The principal is rude, dismissive and hands off from any problems you want to address. Most of the teachers are the same way. There is no communication between the principal and teachers and absolutely no communication from the teachers to the parent. They don't let you know how your kids are doing in school or if there is a problem they wont tell you either. You'll only find out if you child tells you. There is no structure and it is a constant negative atmosphere for the kids. My kids are falling behind and doing worse here than they were at their previous school. Their teachers from last school year where amazing and I wish we never moved here. I can't see how any kid can thrive at this school. My child learns differently and they will not accommodate her at all. Be careful at this school cause if they decide they don't like you it will be a bad experience. Close Quote

Open Quote The teachers provide one on one assessment and care. The teachers evaluate both the academic progress of the child, as well as the behavioral progress. Talent and leadership is plentiful with the teachers at Sunset View Elementary. Close Quote

Open Quote My kids love this school. I have always been impressed with their teachers and the office staff. The principal takes a genuine interest in students and the school, which is nice compared to some in Albuquerque. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
