Zia Elementary

Summary:

Zia Elementary is a public elementary school in Albuquerque, New Mexico, serving 232 students in grades PK-5. The school stands out as a high-performing institution within the Albuquerque Public Schools district, consistently outperforming state and district averages in academic proficiency.

Zia Elementary's academic performance is particularly impressive, with 57% proficiency in Language Arts, 34% in Mathematics, and 63% in Science, compared to the state averages of 38%, 24%, and 34%, respectively. Zia Elementary has also consistently ranked in the top 25% of New Mexico elementary schools, earning a 4-star rating from SchoolDigger. The school's diverse student population, with a roughly even split between White and Hispanic students, is another notable feature, as nearby schools tend to have higher concentrations of a single racial group.

Compared to nearby schools, such as Emerson Elementary and La Mesa Elementary, Zia Elementary stands out with its exceptional academic performance. While the nearby schools have much lower proficiency rates, some as low as 5-11% in Language Arts and Mathematics, Zia Elementary's performance is significantly higher. The school's relatively low student-teacher ratio, ranging from 10.2 to 11.1 over the past three years, may contribute to its success. Overall, Zia Elementary's strong academic achievement, diverse student population, and positive comparison to nearby schools make it an attractive option for families in the Albuquerque area.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote We have attended Zia for 5yrs and 3yrs for our two children, one in special ed and one in gifted. I can't speak highly enough of the teachers, the principal and the support staff. For any parent with a child who has special needs this school is absolutely amazing! The support and foresight the teachers and staff have are truly remarkable. They look at the whole picture, develop long term goals and plans for your child to reach his/her highest potential to prepare them for middle school. The environment here is so nurturing and filled with the sense of community/family. In addition, the PTA is very active, works closely with staff and there are wonderful after school programs. Zia is truly a gem, we feel soooo fortunate to be here. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
