Nixon Elementary School

Summary:

Nixon Elementary School is a public elementary school serving grades PK-4 in the Roxbury Township School District in Landing, New Jersey, with a student population of 257 as of the 2022-2023 school year. The school faces several challenges, including high chronic absenteeism rates, lower academic performance compared to the district and state, and a relatively high percentage of students from low socioeconomic backgrounds.

Nixon Elementary School has seen a significant increase in chronic absenteeism rates, rising from 3.9% in 2016-2017 to 16.3% in 2021-2022, which is notably higher than the nearby Jefferson Elementary School (6.5%) and Franklin Elementary School (12.7%), both within the same district. Additionally, the school's academic performance, as measured by the percentage of students proficient or better on the NJSLA assessments, is generally lower than the Roxbury Township School District and the state of New Jersey averages.

However, the school's diverse student population, with a higher percentage of Hispanic and African American students compared to nearby schools, presents both challenges and opportunities. While the school's Hispanic students have performed relatively well, ranking 124 out of 896 New Jersey elementary schools in 2020-2021, the school's White students have struggled, ranking 614 out of 964 in the same year. This suggests that targeted interventions and support could help improve overall student outcomes at Nixon Elementary School.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote My daughter has been attending Nixon Elementary for three years now. I could not be any happier with the school, staff, and PTA. Having friends from other parts of Roxbury, hearing the issues they have even in what is considered the "better side of town", I'm happy to be a Nixon Parent! We get title 1 help through the state which adds extra programs for the kids. Our principal is top notch making sure she knows all of the students and helping them achieve greatness. I was worried to send my daughter here in kindergarten at first because of the school rating but I believe a lot of it is hearsay. Really, school is what you make of it. If you want your child to succeed, you must be involved. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
