Paul Robeson Charter School for the Humanities

Summary:

Paul Robeson Charter School for the Humanities is an elementary school serving 432 students in grades K-8 in Trenton, New Jersey. The school is part of the Paul Robeson Charter School for the Humanities District, which is ranked 481 out of 613 districts in the state and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

The academic performance at Paul Robeson Charter School for the Humanities is a significant concern, as the school consistently performs below the state average on standardized tests across all grade levels and subjects. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, the school's proficiency rates ranged from 11.5% to 72.7% in math and 30.8% to 57.7% in English Language Arts, compared to the state averages of 19.4% to 73.6% in math and 43.6% to 53.9% in English Language Arts. The school also struggles with high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 7.0% to 18.1% over the past few years, which is significantly higher than the state average.

Interestingly, while the overall academic performance of Paul Robeson Charter School for the Humanities is low, the school's African American and Hispanic student subgroups perform relatively better, ranking in the top 50% of New Jersey elementary schools in those categories. This suggests that the school may be providing some effective strategies for these specific student populations. However, the school's higher spending per student of $12,952 in the 2018-2019 school year, compared to the nearby Trenton Public Schools, which range from $8,534 to $11,353 per student, indicates that resources alone may not be the primary driver of academic outcomes, and the school may need to re-evaluate its instructional practices and support systems.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Finally! A school in Trenton that is committed to giving kids a great education! My daughter attended this school and made great progress. At her previous school the teachers treated her like "a problem" and threatened to hold her back. When I transferred her to Paul Robeson the teachers AND administrators immediately took the time to get to know her and help her and she graduated in June with her class. Be aware though, they don't mess around with discipline. They don't allow kids to mouth off to teachers or play around in class and they readily suspend kids who don't follow the rules. Parents have to come in for a conference every time to have the kid "re-admitted." Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
