Somersworth Middle School

Summary:

Somersworth Middle School is a public middle school serving grades 6-8 in Somersworth, New Hampshire, with an enrollment of 342 students as of the 2022-2023 school year. However, the school faces significant academic and performance challenges compared to both the state average and nearby middle schools.

Somersworth Middle School consistently performs below the state average on the New Hampshire SAS assessments in mathematics, reading, and science. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, only 21% of students were proficient or better in mathematics compared to the state average of 41%, and the school's reading proficiency of 37% trails the state average of 53%. The school has also ranked in the bottom quarter of New Hampshire middle schools for the past several years, placing it in the bottom 25-30% of middle schools in the state. Additionally, Somersworth Middle School struggles to serve its diverse student population, particularly its special education and Asian student subgroups, which perform poorly compared to other schools in the state.

When compared to nearby middle schools, such as Rye Junior High School and Oyster River Middle School, which rank in the top 10 middle schools in New Hampshire and have significantly higher proficiency rates, Somersworth Middle School consistently underperforms. The high percentage of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 32.93% to 40.82% over the past three school years, also indicates a need to support students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Students here are held to very high standards in behavior. The staff and teachers at SMS also work hard to teach within a framework of sustainability practices including composting, maple sugaring on the property, school gardens, and building projects utilizing math skills. Administration here encourages outdoor learning opportunities often, and curriculum presented through the lens of real life skill. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
