The Birches Academy of Academics - Art A Public Charter School

Summary:

The Birches Academy of Academics - Art A Public Charter School is an exceptional elementary school in Salem, New Hampshire, serving students from kindergarten through 8th grade. With a student population of 225, the school consistently outperforms the state average and nearby public schools, such as Pollard Elementary School and Pelham Elementary School, in standardized test scores for mathematics, reading, and science.

One key factor that sets The Birches Academy apart is its low student-teacher ratio of 14.5, compared to the nearby public schools, which range from 10.5 to 18.4 students per teacher. Additionally, the school has a very low percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, at only 4.44% in 2022-2023, significantly lower than the Timberlane Regional School District and Pelham School District, which range from 7.38% to 26.24%. This suggests that The Birches Academy serves a more affluent student population, which may contribute to its strong academic performance.

The Birches Academy's exceptional performance is further highlighted by its consistent ranking among the top elementary schools in New Hampshire, reaching as high as 12th out of 231 schools in 2018-2019 and ranking 47th out of 234 elementary schools in the state in 2023-2024. This consistent academic excellence, combined with the school's unique characteristics, makes it an attractive option for families in the Salem area and the broader Salem School District.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I have two children at The Birches, in 6th and 4th grade, and couldn't be happier with our experience. My oldest switched from town school in 2nd grade and my youngest was part of the first kindergarten at The Birches. Teaching is individualized, allowing students to move ahead if able or gain extra support if needed. Math is held during the same time throughout the school so students can move up a grade if they are excelling. The arts integrated approach allows creativity and hands on learning. We are so lucky to be a part of such an amazing school community. Close Quote

Open Quote I am a parent of two children at The Birches Academy. My daughter is in 7th grade and has been there since 1st grade. My daughter is super bright and has always been challenged. The Birches meets children at their grade level. My daughter is being taught math two years above her grade level. My son is in 3rd grade. He has been there since Kindergarten and stayed back one year. He has been on an IEP since Kindergarten. Both children who have different learning styles and needs Love the school and love going to school. All the Teachers are amazing. Communication is always great, they are dedicated, and you can sense their passion for our school. At The Birches, parent involvement is encouraged. The arts are integrated with academics, which has been wonderful. I feel very fortunate to have found such a wonderful school for our children that feels like a family. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
