Summary:

Osgood Elementary School is a public elementary school in Fargo, North Dakota, serving students from kindergarten to 5th grade. While the school is part of the West Fargo 6 district, which is ranked 13 out of 20 in the state, Osgood Elementary has faced several challenges that set it apart from nearby schools.

One key difference is Osgood's more diverse student population, with 23.58% African American and 4.79% Hispanic students, compared to the higher percentage of White students at nearby schools like Legacy Elementary and Freedom Elementary. However, Osgood also has a higher chronic absenteeism rate of 12%, significantly above the 8% rate at Brooks Harbor Elementary and the 7% rate at both Freedom Elementary and Independence Elementary.

Academically, Osgood Elementary lags behind its peers, with only 34% of students proficient or better in NDSA/Mathematics and 29% in NDSA/Reading, compared to the West Fargo 6 district averages of 43% and 44%, respectively, and the state average of 41% and 45%. Additionally, Osgood has a higher percentage of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch at 37.06%, suggesting a more economically disadvantaged population compared to schools like Legacy Elementary (9.94%) and Deer Creek Elementary (10.96%).

Open Quote My personal experience with my daughter's kindergarten teacher and the principal has been poor. The teacher is hard to communicate and work with. She does not meet my daughter's needs as a gifted student. Her assessments are poor and after speaking with her very little has been done and what has been done does not meet my daughter's needs at all. The principal listens and responds but defends the teachers up and down and does nothing to improve the situation. If your child does not need any special accommodations, this school would be fine. However, if you need to work with the staff to give individual accommodations...I would NEVER recommend this school. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
