Yates Mill Elementary

Summary:

Yates Mill Elementary is a public elementary school in Raleigh, North Carolina, serving students from pre-kindergarten to 5th grade. The school is part of the Wake County Schools district, which is ranked 59th out of 242 districts in the state.

Yates Mill Elementary faces several academic challenges. The school's performance, as measured by End-of-Grade test proficiency rates, is generally lower than the Wake County Schools and North Carolina state averages, particularly for its Hispanic and African American student subgroups. For example, the school's 3rd-grade math proficiency rate was 55.7% in 2023-2024, compared to 69.3% for Wake County Schools and 62.7% for the state. Additionally, Yates Mill Elementary has seen a significant increase in the percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, from 34.21% in 2021-2022 to 57.5% in 2022-2023, indicating a growing population of economically disadvantaged students.

However, Yates Mill Elementary's Gifted and Talented student subgroup performs exceptionally well, ranking in the top quartile of North Carolina elementary schools for the past three school years. This suggests the school is effectively serving its high-achieving students. In comparison to nearby schools, such as Oak Grove Elementary, Briarcliff Elementary, and Farmington Woods Elementary, Yates Mill Elementary's academic performance is generally lower. However, the school's performance is better than that of Mount Vernon, a nearby school with a significantly higher percentage of economically disadvantaged students.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote The teachers at YMES are wonderful, amazing, caring, compassionate and very sweet. But the administration... The principal is obsessed with the carpool and test results (understandable but it's not all about that...). No graduation ceremony for Pre-K or Kindergarten, it feels like he has zero empathy or understanding special situations in students lives. He doesn't make kids feel special and that is also an important part of teaching and learning. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
