Bugg Elementary

Summary:

Bugg Elementary is a public magnet elementary school in Raleigh, North Carolina, serving 232 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Wake County Schools district, which is ranked 59 out of 242 districts in the state and has a 4-star rating.

Bugg Elementary stands out for several key reasons. It has a significantly higher percentage of African American students (62.5%) compared to nearby schools, which range from 20.05% to 57.75% African American. Academically, Bugg consistently ranks in the bottom 10-15% of North Carolina elementary schools, with 0-1 star ratings from SchoolDigger. Its proficiency rates in math, reading, and science are much lower than the Wake County and state averages. Additionally, Bugg has an extremely high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 71.27% to 98.73% over the past few years, much higher than the 27.35% to 99.4% range at nearby schools. However, Bugg does have a relatively low student-teacher ratio, ranging from 7.6 to 9.1.

In contrast, nearby schools like Conn Elementary, Hunter Elementary, and Fuller Elementary generally perform much better academically, with higher proficiency rates, higher SchoolDigger rankings, and lower percentages of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch. This highlights the significant gap in academic performance between Bugg Elementary and its peers, which may be influenced by factors such as racial and socioeconomic disparities.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I work at Bugg, and it is a dangerous place to be. Discipline is totally out of control, and as a result test scores are falling. The latest science test scores were at ten percent. No real learning takes place and it is not a safe place for students or teachers. Parents beware! There is no sign that it is getting better. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
