Forest Hills Global Elementary

Summary:

Forest Hills Global Elementary is a public elementary school in Wilmington, North Carolina, serving 338 students from kindergarten to 5th grade. The school faces significant challenges, with a student population that is predominantly African American and Hispanic, and consistently low academic performance compared to other schools in the New Hanover County Schools district.

Forest Hills Global Elementary ranks in the bottom 10% of North Carolina elementary schools, with proficiency rates in mathematics, reading, and science that are significantly lower than the district and state averages. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, only 20.3% of 3rd-grade students were proficient in reading, compared to 53.3% in the district and 48.7% statewide. The school also has an extremely high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 97.88% to 99.32% over the past three school years, indicating a high concentration of students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds.

While the nearby schools, such as Edwin A Alderman Elementary, Sunset Park Elementary, and A.H. Snipes Academy of Arts/Design, also have high percentages of students from minority and low-socioeconomic backgrounds, they generally perform better academically than Forest Hills Global Elementary. This suggests that factors beyond just student demographics may be contributing to the school's poor performance, and targeted interventions and support may be necessary to address the school's challenges.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote We moved to Wilmington the end of January 2018. Our daughter attended a private school to finish out the 2017/2018 academic year. We decided to enroll her in Forest Hills Global Elementary for the 2018/2019 school year and are very happy with this decision. The teachers are warm, welcoming and incredibly supportive. Our daughter is excited to go to school every day. She has made friends and feels a part of the community. Thank you for all you are doing! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
