Rama Road Elementary

Summary:

Rama Road Elementary is a public elementary school in Charlotte, North Carolina, serving 530 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools district, which is ranked 140 out of 242 districts in the state and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Rama Road Elementary has a diverse student population, with a racial makeup of 22.26% White, 38.68% African American, 30.75% Hispanic, 4.15% Asian, and 3.96% two or more races. However, the school's academic performance, as measured by standardized test scores, is generally lower than the district and state averages. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, the percentage of students proficient or better in EOG/Mathematics ranged from 37.3% to 47.9%, compared to 55.9% to 62.7% for the district and state. The school also has a very high percentage of students (over 99%) who qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a high level of economic disadvantage among the student population. This is significantly higher than some of the nearby schools, such as Sharon Elementary, which has only 11.23% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch.

Rama Road Elementary has consistently ranked in the bottom quarter of North Carolina elementary schools, with a ranking between 988 and 1245 out of 1489 to 1514 schools over the past several years. This places the school in the bottom 20% of elementary schools in the state. The school's performance varies significantly among different student subgroups, with the school's White students performing relatively well, but the school's African American, Hispanic, and English Language Learner students performing much worse. Additionally, the school's enrollment has decreased slightly over the past few years, from 530 students in the 2022-2023 school year to 530 students in the 2023-2024 school year, which could be a sign of declining interest or population changes in the area.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Rama Road Elementary is an amazing little school. Despite its Title 1 status and high free & reduced lunch numbers, great strides are being made. The teachers are highly educated, experienced and enthusiastic. Rama has one of the best principals in the district. Many neighborhoods that opted out of Rama about a decade ago are coming back. The PTA is energized and gaining membership numbers exponentially. My children are thriving at Rama. We are so lucky to have such a great school right around the corner! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
