McLeansville Elementary

Summary:

McLeansville Elementary is a public elementary school serving 330 students in grades PK-5 in the Guilford County Schools district in McLeansville, North Carolina. The school has consistently ranked in the bottom quarter of North Carolina elementary schools, with a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

McLeansville Elementary has a diverse student population, with a higher percentage of African American (40%) and Hispanic (15.76%) students compared to the state average. The school's academic performance, as measured by proficiency rates on state assessments, is significantly lower than the Guilford County and North Carolina averages across all grade levels and subject areas. For example, in 2023-2024, only 35.6% of 3rd graders were proficient in math, compared to 59.8% in Guilford County and 62.7% statewide. Additionally, the school has an extremely high percentage of students (over 99%) receiving free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a high level of economic disadvantage among the student population.

While McLeansville Elementary's overall performance is low, the school's African American and English Language Learner (ELL) students perform relatively better compared to their peers at the school. However, the school's performance is consistently lower than the nearby George C. Simkins Junior Elementary and Waldo C. Falkener Senior Elementary, which also struggle with low academic performance and high percentages of economically disadvantaged students. The high percentage of economically disadvantaged students and the school's racial composition may be contributing factors to the low academic performance at McLeansville Elementary.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Dear reader,

I am a parent of one of the students that currently attends McLeanville Elementary. The Kindergarten teacher and 1rst grade teacher was very good teachers that gave him/her allot of homework as well as school work. When my child returned for the second grade, she/he discovered that she/he was being left behind, do to her/his teacher was spending more time teaching Spanish and English together to some of his/her classmates. How in the world is my child going to function properly, not learning his/her own native language first. When she/he is older, then he/she can choose to learn a different language. Just not in the second grade. This is truly ridiculous for a child to learn two different languages, while being so young. This will only confuse a child.

Do to the lack of teaching and attention, my child is slipping in his/her grades. I don’t understand why my child is in a classroom along with English and Spanish speaking students. Would this not make more sense for Spanish speaking students and English speaking students to have their very own class. I think that this would cut down on confusion, blending in Spanish and English speaking students. My child is also being shoved by several of her/his classmates, pushed around, and has had 3 huge scrapes on her/his leg. Three scrapes within a two week period. This does not include the many times she/he has been pushed. I left a message for the principal to call me back, and told the principal what had happened to my child. I have not gotten any response back what so ever. My child is not allowed to bring his/her books home from school. How is my child going to learn anything, if he/she is not allowed to bring books home. How am I as a parent going to tutor my child on what subjects he/she is having problems with.

If this school is to worried about losing irreplaceable books, do to the economy, then they can just bill me then! My child brings home very little home work for the week, and rarely brings home any work that he/she has done for the week. Most of the time she/he brings nothing back home for the week. The school work that he/she does get half the time has misspellings, type-o’s and does not make any sense. I have stacks upon stacks of homework that he/she has had for Kindergarten and first grade. I don’t understand why my child learned more in Kindergarten and the First grade, and he/she is hardly learning anything for the second grade. My child had a great Kindergarten and first grade teacher. This year, my child is in dearly need of another teacher, due to my child is slipping radically in his/her grades for this year. I don’t understand why my child goes from making immaculate grades, down to doing very poorly for this year.

I would understand if my child was receiving allot of home and school work, and doing actual second grade school work in school. Then I could comprehend better about why my child is slipping in the second grade. Then I would realize, that my child is getting a decent second grade education. My child is learning first grade work in the second grade. Now can anyone reading this rating understand why I’m very disgusted with this current school year. As a parent, I’m having to home school my child actual second grade school work, do to my child being left behind. Thus being, my child will finally have a decent second grade education. Currently looking for another school to enroll him/her in for next year. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
