Montlieu Academy of Technology

Summary:

Montlieu Academy of Technology is an elementary public magnet school in High Point, North Carolina that serves 501 students from pre-kindergarten to 5th grade. The school is part of the Guilford County Schools district, which is ranked 149 out of 242 districts in the state and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Montlieu Academy stands out for its significantly higher percentage of African American students (64.27%) compared to nearby schools, and an extremely high rate (over 99%) of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a high level of economic disadvantage. The school's test scores are consistently lower than the Guilford County and North Carolina state averages across all grade levels and subject areas. For example, in 2023-2024, only 41.9% of 3rd graders were proficient in reading, compared to 44.8% in Guilford County and 48.7% statewide. Montlieu Academy has also consistently ranked in the bottom quarter of North Carolina elementary schools, with a ranking between 951 and 1137 out of around 1,500 schools over the past several years.

Compared to nearby magnet schools like Northwood Elementary and Triangle Lake Montessori Elementary, as well as the traditional public school Jamestown Elementary, Montlieu Academy's performance is significantly lower. These nearby schools have higher test scores, better statewide rankings, and lower percentages of economically disadvantaged students. Montlieu Academy's consistent underperformance over many years suggests the school faces significant challenges in addressing the needs of its high-poverty student population.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I love the school. It is cultured in every aspect and my daughter respects her teachers and appreciates attending. The principal is definitely a breath of fresh air. At this school my daughter has learned to socialize well and broaden her thinking pattern. I am glad I have her at this school because I don't worry that they don't have her best interests at heart. Thank you to all the teachers and principal for caring! Close Quote

Open Quote School failed to meet AYP standards for the past two years. What is even more frightening is that they set the standards so low, and they still didn't meet them. There are a few skilled teachers, however, many are mediocre at best. Yes the school is in a low-income area, but poor people care about their child's education as well. Furthermore, the administration doesn't have a clue on how to improve the school's performance. Now they plan to waste money on Ipads and new MacBook computers so technology will teach for them.

Teachers and school staff are way too concerned with little things such as the color of a student's shoes, and not whether that student grasps the concepts presented in class. Administration will not listen to parent concerns, and the PTA has disbanded out of frustration. Administration and teachers are quick to phone parents at work and demand they bring their child different color shoes, belt, etc. Whenever a parent calls the school they are met with "busy schedules" or are otherwise unable to voice those concerns. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
