Summary:

Martins Creek Elementary/Mid is a public school in Murphy, North Carolina that serves 184 students from pre-kindergarten through 8th grade. It is part of the Cherokee County Schools district, which is ranked 82 out of 242 districts in the state.

Martins Creek has a significantly higher percentage of white students (87.5%) compared to the state average and nearby schools like Andrews Elementary, Hiwassee Dam Elementary/Middle, and Ranger Elementary/Middle. The school's academic performance has been mixed, with a 4-star rating from SchoolDigger but a fluctuating statewide ranking between 398 and 707 out of over 1,500 elementary schools. Martins Creek has shown strong performance for male students, ranking 7th out of 1,461 North Carolina elementary schools, but more variable results for white students and those from low socioeconomic backgrounds.

One of the most notable aspects of Martins Creek is its extremely high percentage of students (over 97%) receiving free or reduced-price lunch, indicating significant economic challenges for the community. The school's test scores also vary widely across grade levels and subjects, with strengths in 4th and 5th-grade mathematics as well as 8th-grade reading and science, but struggles in 7th and 8th-grade mathematics. While Martins Creek's performance is generally on par with or slightly better than nearby schools in the Cherokee County district, it lags behind the higher-performing Hayesville Elementary and Hayesville Primary School in the neighboring Clay County district.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This is an amazing school with a strong focus in academics. My daughter attends and we both love the school. She is in Kindergarten and already reading at a 2nd grade level as is 25 of her classmates! A true gem in a rural area! Unfortunately our school district is pushing for consolidation of these community schools. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
