East Voyager Academy of Charlotte

Summary:

East Voyager Academy of Charlotte is a public charter elementary and middle school serving grades K-8 in Charlotte, North Carolina, with a student population that has seen a shift in racial demographics in recent years.

The school has consistently been rated 2 out of 5 stars by SchoolDigger, ranking in the bottom half of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools elementary schools. Student performance on state standardized tests is generally below the state and district averages, with significant disparities in proficiency rates between different student subgroups. For example, in 8th grade mathematics, only 27.3% of students were proficient compared to the state average of 46.9%. Additionally, East Voyager Academy has a higher student-teacher ratio than the nearby schools, ranging from 21.6 to 25.1 students per teacher over the past three years.

East Voyager Academy is located in close proximity to several other low-performing elementary schools in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools district, such as Ashley Park PreK-8 School, Reid Park Academy, and Thomasboro Academy. This suggests a broader challenge in this area of Charlotte, potentially exacerbated by socioeconomic factors, as the high percentage of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch indicates that the student population likely comes from families with low socioeconomic status.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Principal won't come to the school or meet with anyone, all talk no action, and now they're totally virtual. Hmm....a Mandarin immersion VIRTUAL program taught by people who barely know how to use a computer.... Close Quote

Open Quote We just finished our daughter's kindergarten year. For the 1st half of the year we had few complaints. All teachers were receptive to parental questions and issues. Even at the kindergarten level work by the student was expected. After Covid hit, the school really came through. Within days multiple online classes were setup. As time went on, through feedback and analysis these classes improved greatly. Five distinct, live classes were available daily. It worked out well.

If you are interested in your child getting an education in a Mandarin immersion environment, I recommend East Voyager Academy. Close Quote

Open Quote This school has wonderful teachers and incredible administrative staff. I have two children at the school in different grade and they both love it. It's incredible to hear my kindergartner speaking Chinese after just a few months. Ms. Moore and Ms. Han are amazing, can't wait for another year at EVA! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
