Movement Charter School

Summary:

Movement Charter School is a public charter elementary and middle school serving 640 students in grades K-8 in Charlotte, North Carolina, which is part of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools district.

Movement Charter School stands out for its significantly higher percentage of African American students (87.97%) compared to surrounding schools, which range from 26.57% to 71.78% African American. While the school's overall academic performance lags behind state and district averages, its African American students perform relatively well, ranking in the top 25% of North Carolina elementary schools for this subgroup. However, the school's performance for students with disabilities is particularly low, ranking in the bottom 10% of North Carolina elementary schools. The school also has an extremely high percentage of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 96.5% to 99.53% over the past three years, which is significantly higher than the surrounding schools.

Despite the academic challenges, Movement Charter School has a relatively low student-teacher ratio, ranging from 12.5 to 16.3 over the past three years, which is lower than the surrounding schools like Westerly Hills Academy, Charles H. Parker Academic Center, and Irwin Academic Center. This suggests the school may be focusing on providing more individualized attention and support to its students, who face significant socioeconomic challenges.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I think Movement is an excellent school that teachers leadership. The staff really pour into the children and don't just treat them like another number. I loved best that in his formative years, my son had teachers that looked just like him that weren't just coaches. What I disliked about the school was that the testing scores do rank low and I don't feel like my son was pushed to his best abilities education wise. But otherwise I have no complaints. They have an abundance of resources. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
