American Leadership Academy Charlotte

Summary:

American Leadership Academy Charlotte is a public charter elementary school serving 183 students in grades K-6 in Charlotte, North Carolina. The school has a predominantly African American student population, with over 80% of students identifying as such.

Despite serving a student population with similar socioeconomic and racial demographics as nearby public schools, American Leadership Academy Charlotte has consistently underperformed academically. In the 2023-2024 school year, the school's proficiency rates in Math and Reading were significantly lower than the state averages, with only 36.8% of 3rd graders proficient in Math and 31.6% proficient in Reading, compared to the state averages of 62.7% and 48.7%, respectively. This trend continues across all grade levels and subject areas, and the school has been ranked in the bottom quartile of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools for the past several years, with a 0-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Compared to nearby public schools like Allenbrook Elementary, Ida Rankin Elementary School, and Tuckaseegee Elementary, which serve similar student populations, American Leadership Academy Charlotte consistently underperforms in academic measures. This suggests that the school may be facing significant challenges in providing a high-quality education to its students, despite the high percentage of students from low-income families, which is significantly higher than the nearby public schools.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Aristotle is a wonderful place to learn because of its dedicated, professional staff and outstanding curriculum. After years of public, charter, and homeschool teaching experience, I’m thrilled to find a school that has high expectations and holds teachers and students to them!

This is the place for your child if you want them to learn respect, accountability, curiosity across all subjects, and a global knowledge base that will help them relate anywhere.

This is NOT the place to run from discipline, be lazy, try bullying or violent behaviors, or play politics. Charter One Schools like Aristotle have a mission to instill moral character and academic excellence, which is sorely missing from many current institutions. A free education is the law, but a good education is a privilege. This takes work and willingness from parents, children, and teachers together.

Overall, the school provides a great education based on core values that are delivered with healthy boundaries so students can be successful in the professional world. The caring and qualified teachers and staff make it that much better! Close Quote

Open Quote I was hesitant to enroll my son at APA- but I heard about the new principal that was brought on was doing great things. Two years ago, I did a tour of the school and was so impressed. I enrolled my son this year and the teachers, staff, just overall a great caring school. My son has had issues with the CMS schools- but here- he loves his teachers and calls APA his extended family. I heard this was not the case three years ago- and the new principal has done a great deal for the school- including hiring some amazing teachers. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
