North Graham Elementary

Summary:

North Graham Elementary is a public elementary school in Graham, North Carolina, serving 374 students from pre-kindergarten to 5th grade as part of the Alamance-Burlington Schools district.

Despite having a relatively low student-teacher ratio, North Graham Elementary consistently ranks in the bottom 10% of North Carolina elementary schools, with significantly below-average performance on state standardized tests across all grade levels and subject areas. The school's student population is predominantly Hispanic (35.03%) and African American (35.56%), and over 99% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a very low-income student population. In comparison, nearby schools like Audrey W. Garrett Elementary and Grove Park Elementary have more diverse student populations, higher academic performance, and lower percentages of low-income students.

Despite the higher spending per student at North Graham Elementary ($11,600 in 2018-2019) compared to some nearby schools, the data suggests that the school faces significant challenges in addressing the educational needs of its student population. To improve outcomes, the school and district may need to explore targeted interventions, community partnerships, and comprehensive strategies that address the unique socioeconomic and demographic factors impacting student learning at North Graham Elementary.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Worst performing school in the district. Some good teacher's who care but not enough to make a impact. Out of 1429 NC schools number #1 being best Graham is #1383 they've implemented another old failed tactic to improve the state's F on the state's report card Uniforms and year round school with no real effect besides making it easier to identify the kids from the poorly performing school. In the city of Shelby their are schools that have good test scores gym everyday and recess and high concentrations of economically disadvantaged student's but they do better for their students to prepare them academically for Middle and High school. In my opinion they should either close down the school and disperse the students to better performing schools or fully intergrate the district so that all students have a chance at a good solid education. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
