West Yellowstone High School

Summary:

West Yellowstone High School is a small public high school serving 81 students in grades 9-12 in the town of West Yellowstone, Montana. The school has a diverse student population, with a racial makeup that is predominantly White (65.43%), with significant Hispanic (25.93%) and Asian (3.7%) populations as well.

Despite its small size and relatively low student-teacher ratio, West Yellowstone High School has consistently ranked in the bottom half of Montana high schools, with a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger in recent years. The school's academic performance has been a concern, with proficiency rates significantly below state averages in core subjects like mathematics (13.04% vs. 36.59% statewide), reading (43.48% vs. 46.03% statewide), and science (13.64% vs. 37.03% statewide). These trends have persisted over the past few years, despite the school's relatively higher per-student spending and low student-teacher ratio.

The analysis of West Yellowstone K-12 district suggests that the high school's performance lags behind the overall district, indicating that factors beyond just resource allocation may be contributing to the school's challenges. The small school size and low student-teacher ratio could potentially be leveraged to implement targeted interventions and personalized learning strategies to improve student outcomes, but a deeper examination of the school's curriculum, instructional practices, and support systems is needed to develop a comprehensive plan for improvement.

Open Quote Superintendent overpaid and out of control bully. The good teachers and competent staff members are leaving as fast as they can. Hostile work environment is now the norm. Last of our children is graduating and we are done with the school. Feel bad for the decline because it was good school. School board needs get control of the superintendent. She is not qualified to run a school. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
