Pearl River Central High School

Summary:

Pearl River Central High School is a public high school serving 1,011 students in grades 9-12 in Carriere, Mississippi, part of the Pearl River County School District, which is ranked 27th out of 130 school districts in the state and has a 4-star rating.

Academically, Pearl River Central High School consistently performs above the state average in standardized test scores, particularly in Algebra I, Biology, and U.S. History, with proficiency rates of 78.5%, 76.1%, and 77.2%, respectively, compared to state averages of 67.4%, 60.6%, and 70.8%. However, the school has a predominantly white student population at 87.54%, significantly higher than the nearby Picayune Memorial High School, which has a more diverse student body. Additionally, Pearl River Central High School has an extremely high percentage of students, 99.7%, qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, higher than the nearby Poplarville Junior Senior High School at 99.46%.

Despite the high poverty rates, Pearl River Central High School maintains a relatively low student-teacher ratio of 16.1, lower than the nearby Picayune Memorial High School (18.8) and Poplarville Junior Senior High School (14.8). This smaller class size may be a contributing factor to the school's strong academic performance, though the school may need to address issues of equity and inclusion within its predominantly white student population.

Open Quote The administration really does not care about the students except the ones they have known all of their lives. We have reached out to teachers, admin, counselors and the social worker regarding getting help for our son and year after year, nothing. The other local school system has much more support and truly cares about their students. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
