East Central High School

Summary:

East Central High School is a public high school serving 787 students in grades 9-12 in Moss Point, Mississippi, part of the highly-ranked Jackson County School District. This high-performing school consistently outpaces state and district averages in academic achievement, ranking among the top 10% of high schools in Mississippi.

East Central High School's academic excellence is evident in its strong standardized test scores, with over 90% of students proficient or better in Algebra I, 62% in English II, 74% in Biology, and 86% in U.S. History - all significantly higher than state and district averages. This consistent performance has earned the school a ranking of 19 out of 228 high schools in the state, placing it among the top 30 schools. However, the school faces socioeconomic challenges, with over 99% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a high level of economic need among the student population.

Compared to nearby schools, East Central High School stands out for its academic success. While Gautier High School and Moss Point High School have lower academic performance and higher percentages of minority students, Vancleave High School, another school in the Jackson County School District, also performs well academically but has a more diverse student population. This highlights both the strengths of East Central High School and the need to address the lack of racial diversity within its student body.

Open Quote I gave it this rating because I had 4 children to graduate from there and was very proud of the school and teachers, but now I have grandchildren there and things have changed so much, the Parents run things, we had problems with some girls stealing things out of bookbags, threats to my granddaughter, lies and these things were reported to the Principals and nothing was done. She was taken out of school and home schooled and in just a few months she graduated and will start to college this summer and she is only 16yrs. old. I have been told that these girls have attacked another girl in the same ways. I just am sick that these things have not been taken care of. My granddaughter is very smart, she took alot off these girls. Maybe I am venting to much, but they need to stop this I could tell lots more but I won't Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
