Peculiar Elementary

Summary:

Peculiar Elementary is a public elementary school serving 389 students in grades K-5 in the Raymore-Peculiar R-II school district in Peculiar, Missouri. The school has consistently received a 3-out-of-5-star rating from SchoolDigger, with its statewide ranking fluctuating between the 300s and 600s among Missouri elementary schools.

Peculiar Elementary faces several challenges, including lower academic performance compared to nearby schools in the district. The school's test scores in Mathematics and English Language Arts (ELA) are generally below the district and state averages across grades 3-5. For example, in 2023-2024, Peculiar Elementary's 3rd grade Math proficiency rate was 32.7% compared to the district's 39.1% and the state's 40.8%. The school also has relatively high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 10.1% to 17.5% over the past few years, which is higher than the state average. Additionally, Peculiar Elementary has a relatively high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 33.57% to 38.05% in recent years, which is higher than the state average.

Interestingly, Peculiar Elementary's per-student spending has ranged from $7,036 to $10,644 over the past few years, which is generally lower than the per-student spending at the nearby Creekmoor Elementary, Timber Creek Elementary, Raymore Elementary, and Bridle Ridge Elementary, which range from $10,880 to $12,545. This lower funding may be a contributing factor to Peculiar Elementary's underperformance compared to these nearby schools, which generally have higher test scores, lower chronic absenteeism rates, and lower percentages of students receiving free/reduced lunch.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote My kids have been going to this school for 3 years and they do not have a 14 to 1 student to teacher ratio. Look at the yearbook and you can see the true ratio. My kids have always had at least 20 kids in a class, and up to 23. Part of the year a college kid may come help the teacher, but it's not a certified teacher. They don't even have enough staff to provide reading intervention to all the kids who need help. Only the worst of the worst get the help needed. And because of all the kids who need help with reading, they don't have anyone to provide math intervention to kids who are struggling. They need more teachers.

If they really did have a 14-1 teacher to student ratio then they probably wouldn't have so many kids who need help, and kids being told they don't have room for them.

The teachers try and are good people - but 20+ kids in each class is too much!! And they need 4-6 interventionists to help kids with reading and math. I think they currently have one for the whole school. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
