Scuola Vita Nuova Charter

Summary:

Scuola Vita Nuova Charter is a public charter elementary school serving grades K-8 in Kansas City, Missouri, with a diverse student population of 43.46% African American, 43.21% Hispanic, and 9.14% White students. The school is part of the Kansas City 33 district, which is ranked 299 out of 376 districts in Missouri and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Scuola Vita Nuova Charter consistently underperforms the state average on MAP (Missouri Assessment Program) tests in both Mathematics and English Language Arts across all grade levels. For example, in 2022-2023, the school's 3rd grade Math proficiency rate was 15.2% compared to the state average of 41.1%. However, the school's African American and Hispanic students outperform their peers at other nearby schools, such as Wendell Phillips Elementary and Phillis Wheatley Elementary. The school also has a high percentage of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 68.87% to 73.58% over the past three school years, indicating a high proportion of students from low-income families.

Despite the school's overall underperformance, the strong performance of its African American and Hispanic students suggests that Scuola Vita Nuova Charter may have strategies or practices that could be leveraged to improve outcomes for other subgroups and the school as a whole. However, the school's declining statewide ranking, from 628th out of 1,045 Missouri elementary schools in 2017-2018 to 702nd out of 898 in 2022-2023, indicates that the school's performance has not kept pace with other schools in the state. Additionally, the proximity of several lower-performing schools in the area, such as Garfield Elementary, suggests that Scuola Vita Nuova Charter may be located in a broader educational ecosystem that is struggling to provide high-quality education.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Looks like things are getting off to a good start this year. Now our principal has put forth some directives that I think are very achievable! We had quite an influx of children with a launguage barrier....but I believe we are more equipped to help with there needs. Close Quote

Open Quote SVN has grown tremendously under the direction of new leadership the last three years. Other reviews indicate that the principal made decisions that did not help student achievement. Actually, the changes she made have not only increased student achievement, but have made SVN one of the highest performing charter schools in the city. Close Quote

Open Quote The new "Leadership" seems to be more interested in what the teachers want and not what the school or even the kids need. She (Mrs.Goodman) was a real let down for us as Parents.
With failing MAP scores Mrs.Goodman thought that it would be in the best interest of "all" to cut the school day BACK one hour per day and terminate all after school programs.
The outside of this school looks good but the inside is broken. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
